Gourock to gain 40 assisted living seafront homes

River Clyde Homes have brought forward plans for a waterfront housing development of 40 homes for assisted living at Chalmers Street, Gourock.

The brownfield site is currently in use as a car park and boasts panoramic views across the Clyde, with properties angled to maximise these benefits, necessitating that existing trees be cut back.

Finished predominantly in brick the new properties will be topped by a lightweight construction of dark grey cladding on the upper floor.

In their design statement, Chameleon Architects wrote: “The proposal seeks to present street frontage to both Tarbert Street and Chalmers Street and also to address the corner looking out onto the open green space in front of the existing care home to the east of the site.

“The frontage is broken vertically and horizontally by material changes. The horizontal break in materials to the upper floors reflects that of the existing properties to the east.”

A total of 75 parking spaces will also be provided to serve the surrounding area, accessible from a shared surface street.

Coming from a family.of architects, I would design a break up the present proposed monotonous frontage by stepping back each floor with balconies, creating a less institutional appearance and include a courtyard garden seating area to promote community congeniality, to enjoy the sea view whilst providing shelter.

Coming from a family of bin men. I would design a road that the bin lorry can get in. Don't worry about having the bins a sea view. They don't give a monkeys...
