Cowlairs masterplan calls for 850 homes in North Glasgow water space

Glasgow City Council has presented plans for an additional 850 homes Cowlairs, extending efforts to develop the Forth & Clyde Canal corridor with a range of new park and wetlands.

The Cowlairs Masterplan will provide a range of mixed-tenure homes along a central boulevard and ‘urban cross’ to forge a sense of identity for the area, which will also benefit from new commercial and community facilities.

All homes will be built to the low-energy Passivhaus standard and occupy 30 hectares of cleared tenement land on a site bounded by Possilpark, Carlisle Street and Keppochhill Road.

Councillor Greg Hepburn said: "For far too long, neighbourhoods on the periphery and to the north of the city centre have been forgotten or abandoned.

“But our plans for Cowlairs are a real signal of our intent that North Glasgow will again become home to flourishing new communities: people living in the state-of-the-art, fuel-efficient homes reconnected to neighbouring areas and with the city’s social and economic life.

“Right next door in Sighthill you can see one of the biggest regeneration projects of its type in Europe gathering apace. It has unlocked the potential for the whole area around the canal. In just a few short years Glaswegians will see new homes, new neighbourhoods and a new North Glasgow.”

A developer will now be appointed to deliver the Cowlair Masterplan with the first phase of works expected by 2022.
