Hamilton Green masterplan advances with plans for 266 student beds

Proposals have been brought forward for the conversion of a former science and medical school building at Hamilton Business Park to form 266 student beds.
The building is currently owned by the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) but is now surplus to requirements following the institutions move to Hamilton International Technology Park, resulting in moves to find new uses.
Caird Properties with Jaimac Design propose to deliver the accommodation in two phases, creating 110 beds within the existing building first before going on to build a further 96 bed spaces on land to the east of the present car park.
These elements could complete by May 2021 with a further 60 new build spaces tentatively pencilled in for delivery by the following year, subject to a separate application, following a surge in student numbers.
In a statement, the applicant wrote: “Craigie Property Investments has developed new student accommodation at Ayr Racecourse to service the UWS campus in Ayr. The accommodation is operated by Craigie Student Campus with the rooms let directly to the students during term time and the accommodation used for summer schools, conference and events during the holiday periods.
“UWS wish to replicate this business model in Hamilton to enable the growth and internationalisation of the UWS Lanarkshire campus and to develop the summer school, conference and events market in Hamilton.”
South Lanarkshire Council and UWS are backing a mixed-use masterplan for the wider area known as Hamilton Green.
