Housing pressures force Falkirk Council to buy up former farmland

Falkirk Council’s housing services department has taken on an abandoned farm intending to convert the C-listed farmhouse and steading into 12 homes in addition to 99 new build properties on pasture and grazing land.

Woodend Farm occupies a 7ha site on the eastern edge of the town and will be repurposed to serve as a ‘gateway’ into Halglen Village from the east.

The converted farmhouse/steading courtyard will serve as a focal point for a network of new streets built to home zone principles with new homes fronted with Anstone blockwork and render.

Explaining the decision to pursue the site Falkirk Council wrote in their application: “There is a great need to deliver affordable housing within the Falkirk area. The Housing Need and Demand Assessment identifies that there is a need for over a thousand new social rented properties within the Falkirk area by 2021.

“This greenfield site is ideal for providing good quality affordable housing for the local community benefitted by bus links and infrastructure.”

Existing natural stone boundary walls will be retained and extended as part of the work.
