A historic former stable block in Glasgow city centre has been repurposed as housing by CCG on behalf of GHA and Lowther Homes.

The £7m project, overseen by Collective Architecture, saw the B-listed block remodelled to provide 52 flats for mid-market rent, a big ask for a building which was purpose-built in the 19th century as multi-storey stables for cart and police horses.

This work has seen the period facades sensitively restored while original stable dividers from the upper floors found new use as cycle storage. Further changes include the running of new staircases along ramps, the re-use of drinking troughs as planters and salvaged cobbles relaid on the courtyard and decks.

Sillars Blacksmiths meanwhile have returned to restore the original entrance gates over a century after they were first commissioned to manufacture them back in 1898.

CCG director Calum Murray said: “Bell Street Stables is unique for the city of Glasgow and truly historic housing development.”

Attention now turns to the second phase of development comprising a further 49 new-build flats.

This is lovely! It's rare I like every aspect of a project, but this tops it for me.

Excellent and sympathetic regeneration of old buildings. More of this please.
