Serviced apartments to echo past glories at rare Georgian Glasgow survivor

Laurieston House, a rare and largely intact example of a Georgian townhouse in Glasgow, is to be brought back to life with plans to remodel the interior for use as 11 serviced apartments.

MMLL Apartments have brought on board Elder + Cannon together with Keith Edwards Architectural Consultants to oversee a sensitive remodel of the building, centrepiece of an A-listed neoclassical terrace at Carlton Place fronting the River Clyde.

Designed by architect Peter Nicholson on behalf of local merchant John Laurie in 1802 the townhouse retains a wealth of period features including decorative plaster, twin top-lit oval stairwells and marble floors.

This artistic significance is enhanced by structural innovations, as described by the present day design team who note: “There is a distinct variance in the stacking of accommodation and plan forms, scale and geometry and variety of accommodation as the levels ascend from public through to the more subdivided and plain upper chambers and attic accommodation. The architect has illustrated his technical skills by utilising a series of hidden suspension rods hung from the massive timber roof trusses.

“Both stone and timber stairway is cantilevered with their compact volumes and extruded and geometry continuing to roof level.”

Though presently wind and watertight Laurieston House has languished on the Buildings at Risk Register since 1995.

Cracking building. Well done to the developer if this kick starts the whole street back to life.
