Midlothian Council greenlight twin masterplans

Midlothian Council has thrown its weight behind proposals to regenerate the centre of Newtongrange as well as the Stobhill and Lady Victoria business centre, as part of efforts to capitalise on the Borders railway.

The twin masterplans will each inform the future land uses in the former mining village and are the product of extensive consultations within the community.

The Newtongrange study was led by LDA Design and looks at how a shopping destination can be introduced alongside the A-listed National Mining Museum together with higher density housing, including a community hub and village square.

In tandem with this Smith Scott Mullan also looked at augmenting tourism by exploiting commercial opportunities arising from the railway by forming a proper entrance to the village and museum quarter.

This sets the scene for further consultations before any of the ideas are put into practice.
