Yeoman McAllister Architects have won planning permission from East Lothian Council to create a 70-bed care home and 65-bed hotel in North Berwick led by Frontier Estates.

The Tantallon Road project is situated 2km from the town centre at the foot of Berwick Law and is split between a traditional style care home and more contemporary styled hotel, each sharing a simple palette of brick, timber and render.

In a design statement, the architects outlined their approach saying: “Both the care home and hotel have been designed in a way to break down the massing of the built form whilst using existing and proposed planting to screen and enhance the setting.

“With the addition of considered landscape design, we will create vistas and private gardens throughout the scheme.”

The land is currently utilised by light industry and lies beyond the North Berwick Conservation Area.

What a shower of pap that is - North Berwick is inundated with naff housing developments and this is yet another. Why cannot Architects in Scotland propose something that is contextual, contemporary and meaningful?! Developments across Continental Europe are so much better than this drivel; and some even explore fantastic ideas such as care homes being mixed with nurseries.

@FHM, you do realise that most developers don't want to use architects to design on most buildings? it's lowest price for delivery that wins the day - the responsibility for good design lies squarely with local authorities who could (but never do) insist that a higher standard of design is required, but that's mostly because they don't understand what good design is...

It's good to live your last days being sandwiched between graveyard, industrial units and 4-5am stream of lorries delivering goods to supermarket next door. Well worthy reward for the life well lived. Charged accordingly of course.

@7, planners can be blamed for agreeing Site use, but Yeoman McA can’t be exonerated from producing such pap, and so often! Until RIAS grasp the nettle and strikes off firms who regularly undermine the profession by undercutting financially or by neglecting the duty of care they have to the people who use the buildings they draw, they’ll never be able to argue that architecture and architects should be taken more seriously.

inahuf, do you actually know how the system works? RIAS are never going to be striking firms off for doing what clients pay them to do!
If local authorities set requirements for better design, it's the only way that developers will put money into design, these guys aren't going to do it off their own back as have been evidenced through a number of years.
Striking off architects for producing buildings without much merit would be the end of RIAS, it's already a wee clique, but with no protection of function who would sign up to RIAS?

#9 That's brilliant. Architects demanding that other architects are 'struck off' for being more commercial than their peers. Architects get repeat commissions if they deliver for the client. Not my cup of tea, but YM get repeat work. Maybe if other architects were a bit more concerned with delivery and commerciality, rather than their own profile, they would get more work too?
