Aberdeen Science Centre press ahead with new home

Aberdeen Science Centre has asked Bancon Construction to begin work immediately on the transformation of old granite tram sheds at Constitution Street to create its £3m new home following a move to temporary premises on George Street.

Architects Halliday Fraser Munro have overseen design work for the facility which will repurpose the existing Satrosphere building as an exhibition and corporate space by adding a new build extension and inserting a mezzanine level to double available floor space.

As part of this work, the current roof will be renewed with its structure exposed to maximise natural daylight, illuminating a range of new interactive exhibits and displays.

Liz Hodge, chief executive of Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “The awarding of this contract marks the start of an exciting milestone in our history and moves us closer to realising our long-term aspirations of revitalising Aberdeen Science Centre and creating a state-of-the-art facility people in the North-east can be proud of.”

The new look science centre is expected to welcome the public from spring 2020.

Glasgow and Dundee science centres have separately received £4.3m in funding to improve their own offer.
