LDN Architects have published detailed designs for a £6.5m distillery and visitor centre in the Highlands to capitalise on a whisky and tourism boom.

Conceived by the Cabrach Trust the project will repurpose the abandoned Inverharroch Farm, situated eight miles outside Dufftown, with a range of refurbished and new build properties designed to bring the areas historic role in the illegal whisky trade to wider attention.

In doing so the distillery will employ authentic production methods dating from the 1830’s to illustrate how rogue distillers plied their trade across the region.

Peter McIlhenny, partner at LDN Architects, told The Herald: “This project will transform an existing ancient steading into a visitor attraction, centred around a museum and distillery. Our design adapts the existing range of buildings in a delicate way, whilst incorporating a completely new 21st century building containing the reception, tasting room, shop, café and multi-purpose spaces.

"Those new spaces are tuned to visitor needs while taking full advantage of the magnificent panoramic outlook of the setting. Great care has been brought to the selection and placing of materials to both old and new.”

The designs are on public display today at The Grouse Inn, close to Inverharroch Farm, between the hours of 18:00 and 20:00.

Initial plans drawn up by Annie Kenyon Architect were approved in 2018 and the scheme could commence construction later this year subject to further fundraising.
