Balerno farm conversion to deliver contemporary hillside home

A disused barn at Easter Bavelaw Farm near Balerno is to be transformed into a contemporary four bedroom home following submission of plans by WT Architecture.

The project calls for an existing barn and cottage to be unified as a single home by way of a new build extension within the current envelope of stone buildings, completing the north side of the original steading quadrangle.

Outlining their proposal in a design statement the architects wrote: “The proposals are sensitive to the low-lying nature of the original farm buildings hunkering into the hillside, by continuing the existing forms and echoing the profile and orientation of the existing roofs.

“Existing openings to the cottage and the barn/bothy are retained as far as possible with any new openings relating to the scale of the existing. The new circulatory wing has the same sensitive approach to the existing eaves heights and openings by retaining the stone external wall internally. The large glazed openings to the new northern range emphasise the lightness of the building while providing an indoor/outdoor experience and an impressive outlook to the north.”

New build sections will be finished in timber and brick under zinc or sedum roofs, in contrast with the re-laid slate and stone on existing buildings.

Four bed in that? Looks like a huge four bed!
Sure it'll be a nice project like most of WT's work
