EARL cancellation derails Edinburgh business

August 18 2008

Property experts DTZ have warned that the decision to scrap the Edinburgh Airport Rail Link will adversely effect ongoing efforts to attract new business to the city.  Edinburgh has slipped behind rivals in recent years after failing to attract any new European or global headquarters, despite scoring well in labour skills and availability.

Current plans for a tram link are dismissed as serving only a local market that does not equate to the national and regional market that EARL could have impacted.

DTZ said, "In isolation, the tram link is likely to have limited impact on the attractiveness of west Edinburgh as a location choice.  At best, it may increase the attractiveness of Edinburgh compared to other third-tier cities for investors, but is unlikely to propel it into first-tier location status."

Over the past decade London and Copenhagen have led investment league tables attracting 32 new European headquarters each.  In that time Glasgow attracted two and is currently pressing ahead with its own planned rail link.
