University of Edinburgh complete twin refurbishments

The University of Edinburgh has unveiled a new look Edinburgh College of Art and Murchison House following completion of a twin refurbishment programme by Kier Construction.

£14m has been spent overhauling the A-listed college with LDN Architects overseeing a full upgrade of its external fabric and internal systems, including transformation of an under utilised courtyard as a multi-purpose events space.

A further £7.7m was allotted to Murchison House, former home to the British Geological Survey on the King’s Buildings Campus. Here Reiach & Hall Architects have carried out a comprehensive fit-out to create an open plan teaching hub, offices and business incubation units.

Brian McQuade, managing director of Kier Construction Scotland and North East, commented: “We are proud to have successfully completed these major projects which have allowed us to rejuvenate these historic buildings and provide much improved, state-of-the-art new facilities which will improve the student experience at the University and leave a legacy for staff to enjoy.”
