Forgotten Glasgow lane set to realise its potential pending restaurant approval

A hidden service pend is to be thrust from obscurity by Carrick Properties with the submission of a change of use application to transform ground floor office space and an adjoining lightwell at for food and drink usage.

This work will entail the stripping back of clutter accumulated around the back areas of the B-listed Centrum office block on Glasgow's Queen Street, including removal of various lean-to structures and an access stair, to open up the south facing elevation of with glazed bi-folding doors.

Current bin stores will be relocated internally and brick partition walls between the structural concrete frame removed, allowing an outdoor seating area and courtyard around the current lightwell to be formed.

These alterations will be overseen by Stewart Stevenson Architects who wrote in an explanatory planning note: We believe that bringing these spaces back into use, and ensuring that new installations are treated sensitively and appropriately relative to the buildings original rear elevations has the potential to create a successful and attractive new facility with attached outdoor space that is currently under-provided for in the city centre, and which would align well with GCC’s initiatives to bring currently under used ‘back lane’ space into positive use.”

Glasgow’s city centre lane strategy seeks to bring 90 underutilized through routes brought back into productive use with new restaurants and shops while simultaneously clamping down on unauthorized parking, bin blight and anti-social behaviour.
