Outline plans detail Shawfair health and reproductive centre

Michael Laird Architects have brought forward designs for a combined women’s health and reproduction/dental care centre on behalf of Genus Medical at Shawfair Business Park, Midlothian.

The £7.5m centre forms part of a planning permission in principle application toprovide women with personalised care as part of a broader cluster health facilities adjacent to the private Spire Medical Centre.

Future expansion is envisaged in the years ahead to accommodate a research and development on a neighbouring plot.

In a planning statement its backers wrote: “The proposed building will be developed as two ‘wings’ linked by a central glazed atrium reception. The building will be constructed of high-quality materials in a landscaped setting and will sit comfortably within its surroundings.”

The centre comes against a backdrop of declining fertility in Scotland with just 52.6 babies born for every thousand women aged 15-44 in 2016, far below the equivalent rate of 61.7 for the UK as a whole.

Can someone search the archives for a 90's office building? We can stick a canopy on the front and it will transform into a fertility clinic. No one will ever notice. Job done.
