Barratt promote townhouse living in response to land constraints

Barratt Homes have unveiled their latest range of modern townhouses at their Ferry Village development in Renfrew, responding to growing demand for urban living.

Waterside pays homage to the historic typology with a large open plan ground floor area that can be configured as a formal dining space alongside an integrated kitchen, as well as a downstairs toilet and lobby.

Upper floors are given over to bedrooms, one with an ensuite with a family bathroom located on the top floor.

In a statement Barratt wrote: “With living spaces spread over three floors, townhouses make excellent use of the space and light available. Instead of squeezing rooms in, living and sleeping areas are thoughtfully spread out.

“Building up the way means you can have lots of space without having to fork out for the extra land. For the price of a family home you can benefit from larger rooms, extra storage space, additional bathrooms, brighter, airier spaces and a private garage.”

Urban townhouses have been a diminishing commodity with many Victorian and early 20th century examples now converted into flats, a trend now being reversed in areas such as Shawlands.

I like the idea of townhouse development but I've seen developers/architects proposing some quite ugly examples of 'modern townhouses'... e.g. Barratt's Cumbernauld development looks like a 3 storey Council house. I think they look better when each townhouse is visibly distinct from the adjoining townhouse.

Do modern, small, townhouses actually work for people? Perhaps the 2 flights of stairs will help eradicate Scotlands obesity epidemic...

The first image looks like a block of flats that have been transported directly from 1989.

I live just along from this, not that this is a futuristic estate, but these just dont fit in with the surrounding buildings, infact, the whole Barrett development on this side of the estate doesn't.
