Balhousie Care Group and James Paul Associates have brought forward plans for a new care facility on vacant scrubland at Fairmuir Road, Dundee, to the north of the city centre.

Intended to ‘bridge the gap’ between neighbouring commercial and residential neighbourhoods the chosen design mediates in scale between businesses and homes with a stepped profile formed from buff and light grey coloured brick and aluminium features.

Two sheltered internal courtyards are included in the plan, encouraging socialisation between residents while also affording a degree of privacy.

In a statement the architects observed: “Whilst the site demonstrates a diverse mix of different materials, and indeed building typologies, the proposals here employ a sparse palette of high-quality materials and simple ordering in an attempt to provide a contemporary, unified element. The aim has been to develop a modern and contextually respectful development that seeks to both integrate within the existing area, and robustly reinstate the current void in the Fairmuir streetscape.”

The completed care home will include a variety of therapy rooms and workshops.

Wheres the hipped red pitched roof, formers with obligatory over guttering detail, or - magnoilia harling - surely a statutory requirement? Dundee carehome without pastiche pische? Heres hoping it catches on.

Civic presence .....hmm.. surely you mean institutional presence.
As a depositary for the aged in our community you certainly cannot be accused of over sensitivity.
Are human scale and legibility no longer acceptable architectural virtues ?

That's the old factory site - next to the park. Not really commercial, more industrial site facing existing housing esates. Looks perfectly well scaled given that context. Nice to see scheme with facilities and designed garden actually considered relative to resi acc. for once

Very nice drawings and interesting scheme! I am a little confused about the overall visual feel, as I don't think it represents a care home, and looks very commercial/institutional.

This could just be my own pre-conceived idea of what that should be though, and as I said an interesting scheme to challenge that. Hope it turns out well.

Striking design linking the old industrial units to nearby residential properties. Great to see care homes moving forward with modern design. Outclasses the usual white rendered box.
