Barclays accelerate Glasgow financial campus momentum

Barclays Bank is pressing full steam ahead with its new Glasgow campus after simultaneously filing plans for the third phase of the build just as it commences groundworks for the first.

Building three constitutes a five storey office block providing 71,500sq/ft of accommodation above 36 basement car parking spaces, prominently sited on the waterfront immediately adjacent to Kingston House – which will be turned into an arrivals space subject to a separate application.

Again designed by Halliday Fraser Munro the project seeks to establish a ‘bold new townscape’ amidst the shattered landscape of Tradeston by sharing a common materials palettethroughout Buchanan Wharf.

In a statement the architects observed: “Building three is generally rectangular in plan shape with a chamfered southern edge to suit the proposed new lane. A central core allows for large open plan floor plates with views in all directions. The resulting form derived from these floor plates has been manipulated to provide a rich variety of facades which respond to specific views, streets and activity.

“A conscious decision has been made to vary the depth of the frontage at base level. Recesses, and colonnades at key locations provide interest along the north elevation.”

Artwork conforming to a common theme will be utilised throughout the development.

Excellent news: hopefully this will kick-start development around the rest of this area.

I just hope that thy treat Kingston House with the respect that it deserves -- that includes a proper roof rather that some plastic sheeting.

Personally I'm focussing my hope on drum pressing on with the rest of this masterplan before I spread it around the rest of tradeston. The vista in that render is depressingly modest & dull without the taller elements to the west.

I also really hope this development kick starts the regeneration of the whole of Tradeston, in particular the renovation of all the beautiful listed buildings.
But I agree with Charlie, I want to see Drum complete this whole development in the next couple of years. I'd say it's an encouraging sign that they are already on site, just one year after details of this development first emerged, and that they are already seeking planning for building 3 of 7. All in twelve months. Like I said, it's a good sign.

I'm not convinced this is the quality of architecture that we want to see, but the principle of the development is fantastic. What an amazing difference these developments could make to Glasgow - it would provide a great buzz around the city and hopefully attract further investment and growth.
It would also make the Candleriggs development (or lack of development) a proper laughing stock (more so....).

Any ideas what'll happen to the Beco Building as it doesn't seem to figure in the plans but would assume if Barclays are spending all that cash, they wouldn't want an empty building spoiling it for them

#7 it would be clever if glasgow could create a skillset of workers to take the building down for re-use elsewhere instead of turning it to type 1...
