Aberdeenshire self-build homes earn UK-wide recognition

Two self-build homes in Aberdeenshire have come to national attention after being named as finalists in a UK-wide contest.
Denwell Cottage in Insch is in the running for the title of ‘best timber frame home’ whilst its counterpart; Glencommon near Banchory, is a finalist in the best self build category for projects valued at under £250k.
Denwell Cottage has been designed by Annie Kenyon Architects to employ a mix of timber cladding and white render together with a glazed gable under a slate roof. It was built in just 14 weeks to a set budget.
Glencommon meanwhile is a timber frame home built by Fiddes Architects within a tight seven-week timescale. Clad in a combination of Siberian larch with modern slate wrap-around its projected running costs are under £600 per year.
Both homes were built by Cairnrowan Custom Homes using timber kit packages supplied by Scotframe.
The BuildIt Awards will take place in London on 9 November.

GC -- Shed 7 meets Little House on the Prairie for the Doric Fe'rmer look.
Might have its uses -- tourist stuff / Glamping / last resort social accommodation -- but not first rank housing.
DC -- Interesting on a number of levels / pun intended.
Double decker roof space must have been a challenge to design, transport and erect.
Grand entrance / sun room -- could be the start of a trend. Economics of the build could be a challenge plus integration into the main house but it offers a lot of flexible space and makes a statement of scale and potential utility.
Balcony though is naff -- something out of the low rent side of Lytham St Annes.

Hmmmm...unless of course, the house was for the builder, in which case I will apologise in advance.
