Scottish Canals have launched a public consultation into plans to create a three-way footbridge spanning the Stockingfield Junction of the Forth & Clyde Canal at Maryhill.

The consultation precedes a detailed planning application for the infrastructure link, prioritised as a means to improve physical connections for both residents and canal users.

Pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the junction must navigate a precipitous route down from the canal to ground level to access a narrow single file road tunnel, before ascending back to the canal level.

Draft plans call for an elevated cable-stayed solution although ambitions to create a towering skeletal figure, dubbed ‘The Big Man’, to hold the cables aloft appears to have been dropped in favour of a simple pole.

The consultation kicks-off this Saturday at Maryhill Burgh Halls between 11:00 and 16:00 with follow-up sessions held at Lambhill Stables between 13:00 and 18:00 on the 11th and Ruchill Community Centre between 10:00 and 14:00 on the 12th.

A final session is scheduled to take place at Cadder Community Centre between 13:00 and 19:00 on the 13th.

Just cycled this route last week and wondered why there wasn't already a bridge. Excellent idea - get it built!

I run this regularly and having to go through that weird tunnel is pretty dangerous at times, I'd love to see this built.

I used to run this route as well and think this a great idea in principal, though I can't help feeling it's a little over-engineered - like a pedestrianised motorway flyover. The kelvin has loads of really nice little footbridges, why not use these designs?

I read somewhere that this bridge is more than £10m. seems completely out of proportion for the need and I think a much smaller bridge would make much more sense

It woudl be great to connect the paths, but it is like a cheap version of the Maryhill big man sculpture value engineered 5 years later... the new Firhill bridge by the claypits is simpler and nicer than this bridge...
