Barclays bank on Buchanan Wharf

Barclays bank on Buchanan Wharf

Barclays have agreed to purchase a 450,000sq/ft office development at Glasgow's Buchanan Wharf from Drum Property Group to house a new campus headquarters.

In the process the bank will create around 2,500 jobs with the potential for a further expansion over an additional 210,000sq/ft of office space should the move be a success.

Drum is currently working with Barclays and architects Stallan-Brand to finalise designs for the new purpose-built campus which will be at the heart of the wider mixed-use Buchanan Wharf site.

Upon completion the Buchanan Wharf will provide more than a million square feet of Grade A office space, residential accommodation and a mix of local amenities and landscaped public spaces.

Graeme Bone, Drum’s Managing Director said: “The Barclays deal is a significant statement of intent, heralding an exciting future for the rest of the development. With prime office space plus an exciting mix of homes, local amenities and open public spaces, Buchanan Wharf will be a stimulating and attractive environment in which to work, live and to visit. It will transform not just this neglected part of the waterfront but the entire city centre of Glasgow, once again placing the Clyde at the heart of the city’s economic and cultural regeneration.”

Detailed planning applications will be submitted shortly, with construction expected to begin by the end of the year, pending the appropriate planning consents.

Good news about the jobs but I preferred the original design. Where is the new HMRC building and jobs going?

Yeah the design seems to keep changing, unfortunately getting a bit less innovative, I really hope this becomes a landmark development for Glasgow and not a misjudged step, a bit like how some of Atlantic Square unfortunately looks.

#1 - HMRC will be moving into a new complex across the water, in the city block between York and James Watt Streets.

I like the design shown in the first graphic, with a copper-coloured corner building facing onto the pedestrian bridge. I do worry the designs will be value engineered into mediocrity, and we badly need some out-of-hours life along this stretch of the Clyde.

I’m getting used to the new design, but all I hope is they evolve into taller buildings for a better skyline.
#1 - they will be going to a new building on York street off of Argyle.

Get on with it and build it, for pity's sake. This part of Glasgow NEEDS something!

Once the cleaners leave those blockcs at 6.30pm the area will be dead till the morning. Same at the weekends. At least plant more trees to cover this ugliness...

#6, If they do, truly, put shops/retail/public houses/restaurants (as noted in the D+A statement) then no reason for this place to be dead. Locals on Morrison Street and at the waterfront would be using it, given there is nowhere else nearby (discounting the abysmal Quay).

More announcements on the other buildings to follow shortly no doubt. Including another Government agency I hear which is not HMRC

I really like Stallan-Brand's work, but I have to say this is not my favourite scheme of theirs. Lacks a bit of the boldness they have shown on other schemes which is a shame.

Excellent news for Glasgow, 2500 jobs and this kind of investment is what the city is crying out for!

#10 - UP TO 2,500 jobs. From which 2,300 would be relocation of call centres and back-office personnel from around other offices. Still better than nothing in this land of despair :)

@sadact - the size of the letting implies upwards of 5k staff on site so the 2500 figure will mean new jobs.

@11 plus the fact that 42% are to "high value" jobs i.e above £30k p.a (which is high value in Scotland), then this isn't a new call centre.
