Allison Architecture in partnership with A&G Property Group are promoting the development of a three-storey mews house off Claremont Terrace Lane, the latest in a series of mews properties to be built to the rear of accompanying townhouses.
In doing so it is proposed to re-establish the urban grain of the area following the loss of 19th century mews properties to make way for off-street parking for business occupants.
Outlining their approach the architects wrote: “On the lane side ashlar sandstone in linear courses has been employed to give a crisp contemporary finish. This is a major departure from the random rubble courses of the original constructions illustrating the cultural shift from these being dwellings of rough and cheaper construction to house grooms and their families in service to the main house to being very high-quality homes for modern families.
“It is Allison Architecture’s firm position that pastiche in architecture robs our contemporary culture of its rightful Architectural representation in a historical context. In all the arts only architecture is affected by this unfortunate phenomenon.”
Rear walls will be faced in white brick to help reflect sunlight onto the north facing townhouse elevations
