‘Media cube’ draws attention to Vienna World Museum

Hoskins Architects have completed their re-imagining of Vienna’s Weltmuseum Wien (World Museum), in collaboration with Ralph Appelbaum Associates.
Opened to the public last October the museum now sports a contemporary ‘action cube’ in front of the main entrance to enhance the museum’s presence from Heldenplatz, enticing visitors inside to see the revamped exhibition spaces within. This intervention doubles as an outdoor media screen and can also serve as pop-up café and events space, drawing museum activities out into the city.
In a statement the architects wrote: “A contemporary multifunctional cube in front of the building is the first impression of the revitalised museum inside. As well as offering information, it can also be used as a projection surface, an event stage and an extension of the museum café in the summer months. “The main entrance to the Corps de Logis-Building has been given a new, inviting identity.”
Attention has also been given to interior orientation, rationalizing access while making the most of spectacular period features such as a central columned hall where a new café and shop now sit.
Formerly known as the Hofburg Palace Hoskins have taken their cue from the historic grandeur of the surrounding conservation area to craft a sensitive refurbishment while better presenting the collections within to visitors.
