Blood transfusion HQ brings research boost
The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service has formally opened its £50m headquarters at Heriot-Watt University Research Park, furthering its work in the processing, testing, supply and development of blood, human tissue and cells.

The Jack Copland Centre has been designed by Reiach & Hall Architects to consolidate existing services on a single site, with staff moving into their new home at the end of last year.

Built around a central arcade the stacked facility sees testing and laboratory spaces elevated to second floor level, minimising the footprint and increasing the likelihood of social contact amongst staff.

Expalining this approach the architects stated: “At the front of the building the three storey office wing commands a view of the park, and, with its peopled façade, lends the building a humane and dignified air. Immediately to the rear, the arcade is visible as the high point of the design – literally and figuratively – a glazed lantern behind which again the strips of pharmaceutical accommodation are tiered down towards the north, the Testing and RD&I laboratories appearing as a glass element above a constant height brick wall.

“The plan also steps, reflecting the differing functional strips within.”
