Mackintosh Building restoration contract scrapped
The Glasgow School of Art and Kier Construction have jointly concluded that an existing contract to rebuild the Mackintosh is now no longer deliverable following council moves to begin demolition of unstable sections of surviving masonry.

In a joint statement The Glasgow School of Art and Kier Construction wrote: “Following the fire on 15 June, The Glasgow School of Art and Kier Construction Limited confirm they have jointly concluded that the current contract for the Mackintosh Building restoration will end with immediate effect. Both parties agreed that the current contract could no longer be fulfilled or completed.

“Kier Construction Limited was appointed in June 2016 as main contractor to deliver the works for the restoration of the Mackintosh Building. At contract award the value was circa £25m and the works were scheduled for completion in January 2019.

“The Glasgow School of Art acknowledges the work Kier Construction Limited and its appointed sub-contractors had undertaken to date.”

In the meantime a petition has been launched seeking public support for a full rebuild of the Mackintosh Building to Mackintosh’s original design, saving as much of the original fabric as possible while rebuilding the remainder.

Glasgow School of Art Board of Directors must be unique in presiding over and having responsibility for two of the worst fires this City has experienced.

Why not just issue an AI extending the scope of the refurb?
Job done, simples.

At the time it raised an eyebrow with me that a Hub / School builder with virtually no experience of delivering conservation / restoration projects in Scotland was selected to work on such an important project.
