Warehouse-style hotel envisaged for Merchant City gap site

Warehouse-style hotel envisaged for Merchant City gap site
A long-standing gap-site on Glasgow’s Ingram Street could be plugged following submission of plans by ICA for an eight storey 396-bed hotel.

Occupying a prominent junction at the corner of Candleriggs the scheme would see the present car park give way to a new build solution abutting the gable wall of the Scottish Music Centre.

The warehouse-style hotel will complete the urban block with a ground floor ‘gathering space’ given over to restaurants, bars and leisure activities including the hotel lobby and a ‘garden courtyard’.

Above this level a mezzanine space will incorporate co-working spaces and a film-screening room and hotel services with an ‘industrial gantry’ connecting both sides of the building above the courtyard restaurant below.

In a statement ICA wrote: “The warehouse style is an extremely important part of the character and history of The Merchant City. Many of the finest examples can be seen within the immediate context to the development site and form a significant part of the analysis process. Analysing the surrounding warehouse buildings has formed a key part in generating the architectural language of the proposed building.”

In this manner the proposed materials palette consists of brick, stone decoration, metallic cladding and crittall style glazing

Really like this. In keeping with the Merchant City. Are we beginning to turn the corner?

Big thumbs up from me. Very stylish, very New York. Basically it's not a glass cuboid or an enormous student block - so yes, things appear to be on the up.

That unsightly hole-in-the-ground must have had about ten other hotel schemes thrown at it in the last 20 years. It'd be nice to see this one built.

This looks very positive but don't replicate Collegelands which lacked finesse!

In keeping with the surrounding environment, sympathetic materials, generous glazing and not a student to be seen. I wish more developments were this respectful of their environment - and I really hope it gets built.

Get a room guys.

In all seriousness, I do like it. I just hope its not to big/dominant. Some of the 3D aerial views make it look very big.

Really? Are we 'beginning to turn the corner' with pastiche replicating the early 20th C?
Christ almighty...

Not bad.....it could do with a little calming down I think...probably one material too many, but looks a decent effort!

Everyone entitled to their opinion. Think this build is right for the area. My hopes for the mini Manhattan at Charing Cross corridor sadly came to nothing. I would like bold new buildings too but in the right place and not the low rise glass boxes we have been subjected to over the years.

Why in Gods name is there a mock-tudor fireplace in the hotel lobby?

Can't tell if the people that previously commented on this are having a laugh or not? Have you seen the size of the proposed development?! Totally ridiculous.
