Judges reveal SDA 2018 nominees
Architectural and design practices in the running for a 2018 Scottish Design Award have been named following a two-day judging process.
On the architecture side of the design divide no fewer than 126 entries were received spanning 16 separate category; encompassing every element of the built environment from lighting design to affordable housing, health and education.

From these 74 nominees have been selected to do battle ahead of Urban Realm’s black tie gala dinner, set to take place on 23 August within The Principal Grand Central Hotel, Glasgow.

Urban Realm editor John Glenday said: “The quality and quantity of entries this year threatened to overwhelm our judging team but they rose to the occasion with a record-breaking haul of nominees.

“This year has something for everyone from a speculative ‘million seater stadium’ to a timber whisky temple and even an artificial surf park. We might fall short of a million for our own dinner but I can guarantee plenty of whisky as we celebrate a homegrown wave of the future!”

This year’s architecture judging panel was chaired by Denise Bennetts, founding director of Bennetts Associates; together with Malcolm Fraser, director at Halliday Fraser Munro; Peter Wilson, managing director at Timber Designs; Paul East, associate at John McAslan & Partners and Penny Lewis, architecture lecturer at the University of Dundee.

The full list of runners and riders is available to view now at the Scottish Design Awards.
