Inverness eyesore to make way for tourism gateway

Highland Council have moved to purchase a vacant office block at Bridge Street, Inverness, as part of moves to establish the Inverness Castle as a new tourism destination through an intervention of ‘high architectural value’.
Currently undermined by its less than salubrious surrounds the local authority is keen to overhaul the site to give a better impression to visitors and stimulate the economy in the process once its current court house functions transfer to a new Justice Centre.
This will free up the historic castle to become visitor centre which celebrates the culture, history and natural beauty of the Highlands.
Rural economy secretary Fergus Ewing commented: “This will create a once in a generation opportunity for future redevelopment for the city and the Highlands to create something special of high architectural value - precisely the opposite of the existing buildings.
“£1.5 million of the Scottish Government’s City Region Deal investment will be used to fund the redevelopment of Upper Bridge Street which marks another important step in turning Inverness Castle into an attraction of international importance that both the people of Inverness and the Highlands more widely can be proud of.”

What a wonderful opportunity to built an asset to Inverness to what can only be described as a terrible mistake. The current building, facing the river, has a large access area, where any good architect would place views onto the river. It is unloved and unwanted monstrosity but what to replace it with? Something public, utilizes the views of the river and castle, commercial and possibly a hotel. It needs to be in keeping with the rest of the old town but with some modern touches.
