Parkhead Cross housing proposal evokes lost tenements
24 flats for social rent have been proposed by Anderson Bell + Christie and Parkhead Housing Association for the site of a former sports pavilion at Helenvale Street, Glasgow, immediately adjunct to the B-listed Parkhead Library.

Located in the Parkhead conservation area the scheme seeks to complete the city block through robust frontages and the potential for additional brownfield development further along Helenvale Street.

Forming two separate blocks the communal stairs for each building will be recessed to break up the massing and impart the illusion of a collection of smaller buildings.

Outlining their solution the architects wrote: “At the connection to the Library, a key and deliberate move was to drop the eaves height to match and set the building back. This allows our proposal stand subservient to the local landmark and use it to inform a potential future streetscape.

“Our proposal organised with a series of horizontal and vertical elements in a similar manner to the library piers. These provide a sense of depth and permanence to the facade.”

Both blocks will be faced in a mix of blonde, brown and grey brick with standing seam metal employed above the eaves line adjacent to the library in an attempt to mitigate the massing.
Accommodation will be arranged across two distinct blocks

Nice enough scheme but I don't see how it evokes lost tenements? Seperate blocks and recessed stairs are pretty much not tenement design.

I can guarantee you that the proposed build will not come close to the architecture of the Parkhead Pavilion being destroyed. Yet another non-descript block of flats, of poor design and if I am not mistaken fitted out with even poorer materials. Hey, it's Glasgow, let the building deteriorate, leave it unlisted and unloved and then, if it is not burned out in the meantime, demolish it. Would much rather an architect had come up with a design to refurbish the existing building for future use, housing included.
