Edinburgh private school expands with new teaching space
Squires and Brown have partnered with private education provider Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools to propose construction of a classroom block off Queensferry Road to the west of Edinburgh city centre.

Dominated by the A-listed Daniel Stewarts College Building the current campus plays host to an ad-hoc collection of buildings accrued over the years; including the Belford and Beauly buildings, both poor quality post-war buildings, which will be demolished to make way for the teaching space.

Part of a wider masterplan for the school grounds the build will accommodate a new teaching space for seniors to increase segregation from junior pupils in the form of a two storey space providing 14 classrooms as well as offices, storage and learning spaces.

In a statement the architects observed: “The building is proposed to be constructed in a traditional manner using facing materials to complement its historic surroundings and the use of stone ashlar walls with detail horizontal bands respond to the surrounding architecture. This is contrasted with contemporary aluminium curtain glazing set in to repeating rectangular projecting stone bays reflecting the existing form of the fenestration on the listed building.

“Zinc cladding has been introduced to the top of the first floor to visually reduce the scale and to tie in with the lead detailing on the surrounding buildings. This zinc cladding is continued through the soffit and fascia profiles.”

Arranged across four separate elements the resulting solution stipulates a continuous circulation route enclosing a triangular foyer space at the centre.
Over time the entire campus will be rationalised in accordance with a 2017 Page\Parki masterplan
