Elgin High School opens its doors
A £30m High School in Elgin has thrown open its doors to pupils and staff offering occupants and the wider community access to a fitness suite, auditorium and library.

The 600-pupil capacity school comes equipped with classroom smart boards and equipment for senior students to undertake distance learning.

Faced in black render and reconstituted stone concrete blocks the high school features twin wings of teaching accommodation arranged around a central atrium which doubles as a social space.

Elgin High School was delivered by Hub North Scotland, JM Architects and Balfour Beatty on behalf of Moray Council in tandem with a new primary school for the town.

Work will now proceed on the demolition of the old school building.

OOFT indeed. It kind of looks like a boom-box - but a large factory scaled one.

WHY??

Perhaps what it needs is a nice mural or two? Maybe Glasgow could export some of its surfeit of murals to help out? But then again S.C.U.M. (the Society for Covering Up Murals) might not approve of the city turning murals into an export industry…

#2 spot on- those speakers are beauties, the Elgin kids certainly won't miss the school bell.
Nice graphic equalizer façade too. Retro.

Occasionally a piece of architecture is so woeful, words fail me.

Jaizus, it's like a channelling a bit of communist architecture there... all it's missing is the state banners hanging just at those white panels :'D

I've often thought 1980s hi-fi systems could be a rich source of architectural inspiration, so I'm delighted to see this design. Perhaps Hub could experiment in future with buildings designed to resemble the Sinclair C5, or Alexis Colby's shoulder pads?

Loving the column that you just don’t want to be there.
I can’t stop looking at it.
I’ve been staring at it for a good 15 minutes now.

Such a great elevation spoiled by a service cover in grass with the dreaded 'grano' surround, and a ductile iron chamber cover in the paving... and what's that channel drain all about?
