Glasgow City Council fast tracks Buchanan Galleries expansion
Glasgow City Council has expedited completion of a BDP designed ‘southern extension’ to the Buchanan Galleries shopping mall, allowing Land Securities to expand its Buchanan Street footprint from next year for completion by 2019.

Mothballed in 2015 the addition forms part of a far larger proposed expansion of the mall and would include a major new Next retail unit and a ‘rustic’ style rooftop restaurant area accessible from Buchanan Street directly by two scenic glass lifts.

Land Securities claimed that they were unable to proceed with the £310m Buchanan Quarter build in tandem with Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Programme works to Queen Street Station but will now forge ahead with extending its valuable Buchanan Street frontage

Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “The council’s approval of these actions allows for the southern extension of the Buchanan Galleries to go forward while work on the EGIP scheme at Queen Street Station continues.  In taking this decision, we are looking forward to significant economic benefits and opportunities for the whole city, as we work to make Glasgow city centre an even more attractive location for visitors and investors.  We will work with the developer to ensure that everyone can enjoy new and existing fantastic features of the Galleries, including the steps, one of the city’s most popular public spaces.”

The removal of a public gathering space at the Buchanan Street steps had been a key bone of contention in relation to the original plan.

Does anybody know if this still includes plans for that hated rotunda to replace the Steps?

#2 - indeed, SNP made a manifesto commitment to retain the steps during the council elections, although the current planning permission is for the glass rotunda
