Lighting designers sought for ‘Aberdeen in Colour’ nocturnal strategy
The granite city is looking to paint itself in a riot of colour in the latest commission to emerge from BDP’s City Centre Masterplan.
Councillors are keen to bring new life to the nighttime economy by implementing novel lighting solutions which can improve the safety and attractiveness of city centre streets after darkness falls.

Addressing the issue of lighting their masterplan BDP observed: “Currently, the character and identity of the city is lost as daylight fades. There is a lack of a strategic approach to lighting – a missed opportunity to focus attention on the city’s many splendid buildings and spaces and the associated benefits for the evening economy.

"Cold, anonymous facades can be transformed into warm and colourful spaces giving city a whole new perspective as well as creating new and attractive outdoor event venues. Appropriate lighting will work in harmony with the landscape materials palette through a designed hierarchy that considers luminaire aesthetics, colour temperature and colour rendering.”

To deliver these goals a multidisciplinary team including urban planners is being sought to make light work of the challenges facing the city, with the aim of improving wayfinding and enhancing Aberdeen’s distinctive cultural offer.

A budget of £75k has been allocated to the plan with a deadline for submissions of interest set for 24 July.

Such 'new perspectives' just add to the spiralling light pollution levels within a city...not very sustainable?

"a local pleb" - I think you have misunderstood both the intentions of the light commission and my comment.
