Burd Haward Architects are to helm an overhaul of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, on behalf of the Royal Household to transform the visitor experience, rationalise layouts and improve accessibility.

Three key areas of improvement have been identified namely conversion of the Abbey Strand buildings to house a new learning centre and ten serviced apartments; repair and refurbishment of mews buildings and the Coachmen’s House to form a reception and visitor facilities & an upgrade of hard and soft landscaping, including the remodel of Abbey Gardens.

Outlining their designs BHA wrote: “New learning spaces in the Abbey Strand will draw on and celebrate the anarchic history of the buildings, encourage learning and raise expectations for the rest of an educational visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.”

Architectural interventions at Abbey Strand will be kept simple with ground floor windows opened up, new slate roofs and removal of cement harling. Internally work will be limited to the removal of later partitions, new paneled wall linings and the removal of a section of floor to thread a stair and platform lift through to the learning centre.
