An international design competition has been launched by the Ross Development Trust in collaboration with the City of Edinburgh Council and Malcolm Reading Consultants to find an architect-led team to take the reins of one of the most significant spaces in Edinburgh, the Ross Pavilion in Princes Street Gardens.

First-stage submissions must be made by 13 March from which five (or more) finalists will be plucked to battle it out in a second phase during which concept designs for a £25m pavilion, visitor centre and café will be made in addition to sensitive improvements to West Princes Street Gardens.

Jury chair and chairman of the Ross Development Trust remarked: “Designers will need to be sensitive to context and historic setting – the Castle being a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the Gardens having botanical, commemorative and civic interest. But the design for the new Pavilion and the wider project must also communicate Edinburgh’s creative energies and international profile.”

The competition winner is set to be announced in August 2017 with construction expected to get underway in 2018. Upon completion the new pavilion will serve as a venue for large and small-scale arts events.
