Aberdeen FC formalise £40m Kingsford Stadium plan
Aberdeen FC have lodged a formal planning application for the construction of a £40m stadium, training ground and community facilities at Kingsford, Aberdeen, to allow the club to realise its growth ambitions.

To that end Halliday Fraser Munro have prepared a masterplan for the club which will see it relocate from its historic home at Pittodrie to green belt land off the under-construction Western Peripheral Route between Kingswells and Westhill.

This scheme calls for a 20,000 capacity stadium to be built faced largely in vertical Rodeca Polycarbonate cladding panels oversailing a steel structure and base of dark grey facing brick. The primary south elevation will be finished in a silver/grey aluminium rainscreen.

Outlining their design the architects said: “The Rodeca cladding has been chosen as it provides a translucent finish which will create a subtle red glow from the internally lit concourse areas at night. The translucent qualities of the cladding will also bring a diffuse light into the concourse areas during the day.

“The same cladding panel has been used to the rear of the north, east and west stands bringing a high quality of diffuse light into the heart of the stadium. The choice of red through to white cladding helps to provide the stadium with an identity.”

A separate pavilion will offer office space for Aberdeen FC Community Trust post-completion as well as a gymnasium and multi-purpose events space.

This design is so generic, banal and tame that it could be placed anywhere on a UK industrial estate. Where is the joy? Where is the atmosphere? Where is Aberdeen in here apart from red plastic? I love the fact that in their Design Statement, HFM have said:

“The Rodeca cladding has been chosen as it provides a translucent finish which will create a subtle red glow from the internally lit concourse areas at night.

It's almost like the Architect's were trying to be inspired by the Allianz Arena or perhaps The SSE Hydro but then just spectacularly missed the mark. Worse still is the "Internal Visualisation looking towards South East Corner" as I think this sums up the timidity and parochial nature of this scheme - from the pathetic looking space trusses and met-sec roof to the lack of context of where the stadium is located all of this really screams: "Welcome to (the outskirts of) Aberdeen, once the Oil Capital of Europe".

Could be a traffic nightmare in the making this one.

Gerrit built! As a football fan I think this is long overdue, as a club Aberdeen have not been able to grow due to a critical lack of facilities. Yes it could be better designed. I don't think it's that bad considering these are baby steps on the clubs growth. In a decade or so they will have the fan base, income to build something more exciting and impressive. This is exactly what they need right now though. And it's not just football, the city, shire and national economy benefits from a big team like that being allowed to grow and not stifled.

What on earth? No one can really take your comments seriously here #3. Why would you waste £40 million on a terrible bit of design in the hope that 10 years down the line you have matured enough to request a better quality piece of architecture. Shocking.
