East Dunbartonshire awards consent to new Bearsden primary
Holmes Miller have hit the ground running in 2017 with planning approval for the creation of a 17-classroom primary school building in Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire.

Located within the grounds of of St Andrew’s Primary School on Duntocher Road the amalgamated learning hub will also take in pupils from St Joseph’s Primary in Milngavie and is on track to open its doors by summer 2018.

Key features of the school will include classroom ‘breakout’ spaces, a ‘bowl’ of outdoor play areas and a recessed entrance space which also provides direct community access.

In their design statement the architects said: “The building offers a modest elevation to Duntocher Road, which is unimposing and creates an interesting and inviting façade to the new school. The use of the principle building materials, of facing brickwork to the lower level and vertical hanging slate above, assists in reducing the scale and mass of the development.

“To the courtyard elevation, large panels of masonry are broken up with substantial panels of full height glazing, which bring daylight into the flexible teaching areas, and connect the internal spaces with the playground. It is proposed that coloured film is applied to a number of the high-level panels of glass, reinforcing the new school identity, and bringing a kaleidoscope of colour to the interior of the school.”

Robust courtyard ‘ball walls’ of brickwork will be created to ensure playground spaces weather expected wear and tear while  large elements of curtain wall glazing will be employed to draw light into classrooms. Fibre cement slate cladding used at first floor level and above.
