Moxy Hotels firm up Glasgow venture

Fronting a new civic area at the junction with Duke Street the six-storey hotel will include an ‘industrial chic’ lounge, bar and restaurant as well as a video wall and games area.
In a design statement developer Vastint remarked: “The main hotel entrance will be from the west elevation fronting the town square and there will be a connecting path and entrance plaza for safe and convenient pedestrian access to the rail station and the adjacent bus stops.
“There is a strong emphasis on the design of both gables (east and west) to provide visual interest and quality. For this important and prominent site we have dropped Moxy’s standard design to create a bespoke solution with additional glass on the ground floor and we have turned the bedrooms at both ends of the building to address the gables.”
The finished scheme will be faced in a variety of fibre cement panels including ‘brick’, plain and dark varieties to tie-in with existing Collegelands developments.

Glasgow should be looking to elevate the quality of design on its High Street. This building would be more suited to an out of town industrial estate.

Those side elevations remind me of that other classic building on High Street, you know, the one that looks like a big yellow prison ship...

Was that designed by Smith Design using the same palette of materials as that carbuncle retail park in Cumbernauld?

#1, if you've seen the curved concrete (or whatever material it is) student flats further down the high street you'd know that your comment is utter nonsense

Well, it's better than the student flats down near Bell Street. They really are a skidmark on the bedsheets of central Glasgow. This at least ties in with the surroundings, though High St still deserves far better.

Agreed with #2. They could be making more of an effort in design terms with this. Bit disappointing.
Also think they could be doing more to liven the street levels in that area. More cafes, shops, etc.

Let's stop this theft of our built heritage. This is the worst kind of architectural underachievement.
