Tom Elder and Dick Cannon, founders of Elder & Cannon Architects, have been presented with lifetime achievement awards by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.

Honouring their respective contributions to architecture the organisation cited a number of seminal projects such as the D&D warehouse, just south of the Clyde in Central Glasgow, the Church of the Holy Name in Mansewood and the National Bank of Pakistan at Sauchiehall Street (since sadly demolished).

In its citation however the RIAS observed that it was through an ambitious remodelling of Ingram Square, a complex reconfiguring of 14 buildings in Glasgow combining new build, conversion and façade retention from which the practice first made their mark, particularly in the use of brick which has come to define their work.

The citation read: “As architects, educators and innovators, Tom Elder and Dick Cannon have helped transform the West of Scotland and have fundamentally influenced architecture much further afield. They are quite rightly recognised by their peers as among the most talented and inspiring Scottish architects from the latter part of the last century and the beginning of this.”

In more recent times the practice has won favour for works including St Aloysius School buildings, Laurieston and offices for Shettleston Housing Association.
