Govanhill Bath’s refurbishment plan goes on show

Govanhill Baths Community Trust has commissioned Hall Black Douglas, together with Alistair Coey conservation architects, to restore the Edwardian building whilst simultaneously adding a suite of new services to the public.
This work will entail formation of a new reception space within the current foyer together with a community café and garden overlooking Calder Street as well as the reinstatement of a learners and ladies pool.
New facilities will also include a sauna, steam room, gym and activity space with several historic cubicles retained as private bathing and changing booths. In addition a basement space will be opened up through insertion of a new stairwell and restored light well.
An exhibition documenting the planned work is taking place at the baths this afternoon through to 20:00.
A community gym will be built as part of the work
A first floor access gallery will create a series of flexible, multi-purpose spaces centred around a planted courtyard lit via series of roof-lights

I am delighted to hear that Govanhill Bath's refurbishment is taking place. As a child my school would take us there for swimming lessons. This will delight so many to hear this fantastic news. I wish everyone involved in the refurbishment great success.

Great news for Govanhill! Although they should keep the community hub idea and move it to another venue, maybe include a community arts type thing? Anyway this is great. :)

Nice to see these old pools coming back to life. They have so much more character, even if they aren't usually a conventional length.
Who on earth coined this 'wellness' word, though? What's wrong with fitness? No doubt it's non-PC, or offensive or something, these days.

I learned to swim at Govanhill Baths and have very good memories of the Life Boys and BB swimming clubs. Delighted it is being brought back to life!

@ 3, Clive. 'Wellness' is about mental and physical health including fitness, nutrition, sustainable communities and more. But yes, awful word.
A pity NORD aren't around to complete what they started but I'd be interested to know who HBD beat to win the work.
Fantastic for Govanhill though (and Community action everywhere) and an incredible effort by all involved.
