Sauchiehall Centre upgrade secures planning consent
Asset managers Quadrant Estates have obtained planning consent for a series of external alterations to Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Centre, designed to provide enhanced retail and restaurant space.

Overseen by Keppie Design the plan will include a 13,000sq/ft retail unit at the corner of Wellington Street and Sauchiehall Street together with a sister unit on the corner of West Campbell Street.

Christopher Daniel, founding partner of Quadrant Estates, commented: “Our aim is to improve the vitality and viability of Sauchiehall Street and we are confident that our ongoing enhancements of the Sauchiehall Building will create an exciting and vibrant leisure hub, helping to attract greater footfall, and put Sauchiehall Street firmly on the map as a top retail and leisure destination.”

Both corner units are being marketed to a variety of retail and restaurant tenants with JJB Sports reportedly lined up to take the western space and a restaurant chain poised to take the other.

It's such a shame something more radical couldn't be done with this building. Removing the two ramps would transform both Wellington and West Campbell street.
Given the limitations of what they're trying to achieve here it's so-so, the west corner's a bit blingy for me.

It's hardly ambitious is it? Lipstick on a pig comes to mind. The worst aspect of this appalling structure ( why does it so aggressively turn it back to the street?) is the vast dark bricked negative space above the shop-fronts- could they not erect digital screens or even neon lit advertising, not just to hide it, but even to enliven the space?

The whole thing needs torn down. So many grand buildings were destroyed to build that monstrosity.

Why not just put a vine up the wall, stick on some fairy lights, a wee quaint clock and a vintage street sign or something

This should be on a list of other ugly 60/70s buildings to be torn down . It's dull and ugly. Be better to tear it down and make another civic square there. Be useful for small entertainment events and the visiting markets. At least it would make the area more attractive and help bring attention to the area and increase footfall . There are plenty of other vacant spaces for gyms. The shops within could relocate to the vacant shops in the area. What were they thinking of when this was thrown up? Uninviting and bleak. And Under the ramps stink of urine if you use them to get to Sauchiehall st. If only as much effort was put into saving and finding uses for the listed, neglected, beautiful buildings instead of the horrors dotted around the city centre.

Now that is the most sensible common sense wonderfully liberating civic urban idea I've heard in a long long time. Seriously. There has to be mileage in it. The council should put a compulsory purchase order on it and enter into cahoots financially with whoever.

Yip there it is right there folks .... fly in a hot-shot urban re-imaginer (Jan Gehl) let him inform the design, pretend you're listening to the locals then engage the commercial giants who tick the PQQ boxes (but give little or not so much as a shit) and this is what you get. As an architect I'd be embarrassed to limit my creativity to this. The job was only half done when they published the strategy .... deilivery will be dreadful.

It is getting to the point where you really fear the abomination of carbuncle we should expect in the next few years with GCC desperate to spend their £1.1Bn City deal cash ....

@tamany- reactivating the side streets flanking this building was one of the recommendations of the council commissioned sauchiehall masterplan led by Jan Gehl's firm. Granted, long term, replacing the building would be ideal but in the intern this is a definite improvement....The amount of knee jerk negativity on the comments section here is depressing.

"Overseen by Keppie Design...."

I didnae read on efter that part.

Am willing tae bet the makeover involves some cheap cladding and some feeture lighting. God help us.

Glesga deserves so much mare than this.

#11 i see your point, but i would like to take a slipper and just hit whoever designed this vacuous shite. And that's not the original medieval fortress I'm talking about - that just needs demolishing once and for all. So, can we all just stop faffing about. Billy's point is spot on.

#2 totally agree. One thing I think Glasgow could do with is some big, colourful, times square type advertising. A big TV screen or two dotted about the place.

Well, I believe that a job of this sort doesn't come from one day to the other. I appreciate the effort on reactivating the corners of a well out-dated brick giant like this. You have to start somewhere and I'm sure there is a lot of a hell more to do with the main structure. Time is limited and Planning tends to constrain design so much. I really hope to see the outcome of this.
