£43.3m Largs Campus plans move ahead
North Ayrshire Council is pressing ahead with plans to construct a JM Architects designed school Campus in Largs, within the grounds of Sport Scotland Inverclyde National Centre, following the appointment of Morrison Construction to deliver the scheme.

Overseen by Hub South West Scotland Largs Campus will take shape on a steeply sloping site on uplands to the rear of the town, faced in rustic grey/white brick.

In their design statement the architects observed: “Given the lack of quality contextual influence mentioned above, we feel that the building should project a sense of individuality; that visually it should stand proud from its surroundings and act as a focal point within the built environment.”

The new school will combine a relocated Largs Academy, St Mary’s RC Primary and an amalgamated Brisbane and Kelburn Primaries offering space for 2,120 pupils.
Nursery provision will also be provided on-site

A city aesthetic dropped on to the rolling countryside- "lack of quality contextual influence.." what about the natural environment ? !

Missed opportunity to do something different and a disappointing palate of materials. Would have been good if a move was taken to create a 'Green' exemplar where massing / finishes / performance was strongly influenced by environmental & sustainable factors. I get the feeling what will happen here will be mere tokenism!

I'm not sure it's big enough.

Such a shame that the architects have been so inflexible with the build. This school has an extremely high bracket of talent in the performing arts and yet that is the faculty that gets less and less towards it. With a music department the size of the PE changing room and no drama department worth mentioning despite fantastic staff in both departments, it's a wonder if we get school productions half as spectacular as the others have been. Rigid and inflexible architects are drowning the talent of the school with treadmills and ugly bricks, and it makes me truly sad. All the high hopes we had for the new school have been stripped away one at a time; truly a disappointment.

No one I have talked to, including any teachers I've talked to, have liked one single aspect of the new school. I don't know how this has been given the go ahead, everyone's opinion has been completely ignored.

Honestly, I find it hilarious that, no matter what the people have said, including school staff/parents/students/etc, Mrs.Burns and her pompis posse, have decided once again what is 'right' for everyone, even when there has clearly been so much hate for the new school build, especially on how idiotic the design of the flat roofs had been.
How such a woman managed to get such a job, I have no idea, but from what I've heard from students, she isn't doing anything to help them, teachers are ultimately failing students who are struggling in most classes ( ask about how the prelims went for S5/6), and all she cares for is that they little kiddies have blazers and that they look smart, yet she also states no girl should wear a 'short skirt, now I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure a skirt just covering your arse crack, is not a 'long' skirt.
Anyway, this is turning into a rant, but more people should state their opinion, I've met far too many parents who have something they want to say, but are to scared of such a 'lady' to say anything at all.
