August 12 2015Kirn Primary, Dunoon, to accommodate up to 320 pupils and a 30 space nursery.
Delivered in partnership with Hub North Scotland this will see an existing 1950s extension swept away to accommodate the expansion which will offer new classrooms, a library, dining hall and sports facilities.
In their design statement the architects noted: “Both levels of the building are envisaged as being clad in facing brickwork with clearly articulated horizontal bands incorporated.
“Robust, durable and precise the resultant brickwork would build a simple composition of solid and void around the buildings envelope. The void of glazing to the main courtyard will create an interesting articulated façade responding to the lighting requirements needed internally but allow a clear façade which will provide animation when viewed externally.”
The existing Victorian school will be retained and refurbished under the plans, emphasised by the ‘ground hugging horizontality’ of the brick and glass new build.
