Plans drawn up for Aberdeen student accommodation
Halliday Fraser Munro have drawn up plans for a on behalf of SHC Developments to demolish a detached dwelling house on Aberdeen’s Holburn Street to make way for 46 student flats.

Clad in glass, standing seam metal and white render the scheme will retain existing trees, extrapolating the form of an existing adjacent build.

In a design statement the architects noted: “The design takes the form of an L shape maximising the street frontage; this creates an area to the rear which will be used as amenity space for the residents and reduces impacts on adjacent properties.

“At the corners the building is stepped down to form a feature which creates the appearance of a series of stacked accommodation blocks. This breaks down the massing of the buildings and opens up the corner to allow ‘welcome zone’ area for landscaping at the main entrance to the development.”

The scheme supersedes a prior five storey iteration which was deemed to be ‘too bulky’.

Scary...they've actually managed to make it look worse since their initial proposal.

I don't know that it's worse, David. The modelling and setbacks certainly break it up a bit better than the previous lumpen mass, but it's HFM so it was never going to be good.

I agree with Dave - #1

The first scheme may have had some potential (clearly not realised I'm sad to say) - but the complete re-design; it's like admitting to the whole world - we proposed something so awful it could not be refined and worked with. So bad in-fact we had to start entirely from scratch - and then when we did. We did it worse than the 1st time.

Auntie, at least the previous incarnation looked somewhat like resi, whereas the later version looks like 90's local housing offices / business park much cheapness.

I'd love to know what discussions took place between HFM and the planning department to produce the second scheme.
