Clyde Street hotel tower makes way for student flats
A planned hotel on Glasgow’s Clyde Street is to be re-jigged to form 290 student residences in a 17-storey tower under revised plans submitted by London based 21st Architecture.

Plans were first drawn up for 236-246 Clyde Street by the former gm+ad architects in 2007, which will now be reworked by Silk Ltd in light of the changed economic situation.

This sees the massing, height and stepped profile of the original application remain largely unaltered, including the use of bronze anodised aluminium cladding panels, whilst reconfiguring interior spaces for the new usage.

In their design statement the architects noted: “The design is organised to present two vertical elements either side of a recessed light well. Set-backs articulate a series of horizontal alignments with the first creating a strong base with a one storey podium and the next lined to the height of the adjacent building forms on Clyde Street.”

A number of high rise proposals have emerged for neighbouring plots over the years but none have, as yet, made it out the ground although the developer is confident that this project could be ready for occupation by August 2017.
The project will remain largely unaltered from the previous submission

Lovely stuff.

If that materials are good this will be a corker.

More student flats!! What is going on when we feel we should be building student flats on the waterfront? We should be creating an active waterfront, not a busy 8-9 months of the year waterfront.

I dunno about this one. Nice to see a bit of height down by the river, but it would have been good to have some other kind of use at ground level that was a bit more public (notwithstanding the lack of these around it).

And I've a worrying feeling that the rooms on the internal face of the central recess may be somewhat dingy. And more student housing? Jeezo.

Alf - was on a report yesterday that Glasgow has around 10,000 student beds (and same in development) but with a population in excess of 60k students, there's a real dearth of accommodation. Even 9 months of life for that part of the river are better than 12 months of graveyard as is currently the situation

Like the scale. Pleasant elegant hybrid between Perret's Rue Franklin and Kelvin Court at Great Western Road. Obviously, a relatively weak podium design.

Compared to the student 'barracks' at Murano Street and other such places, in no way can I see this level of expenditure on the facade as Student Accommodation (more like 5* Toronto waterfront hotel). Budget hotel anyone? One to be value engineered unfortunately.

I feel it'd weather like shit though, if it ever came to it - good seagull/starling nesting roosts abound :-)

We really do need to make more of the river at this central part of Glasgow. Most other cities celebrate their river. We just seem to neglect it. Agde in France use their river for all sorts of events and have pontoons with restaurants on it. Hopefully more investment will help generate more interest
in this forgotten part of the city centre. So I am all for the student accommodation. At least it should bring some life to the area .

Agde is on the Riviera, Glasgow gets rained on 362 days a year.

love the massin here but it could be badly let down by cheap materials by the sound of it. The council should hold out for black and white brick, in which case this would be a slum dunk.

simple reason everyone's building student accom - it's highly lucrative. Rents are extortionate in these places - well above what they can get away with charging to anyone else i.e. £100 to 150 p/w for a glorified bedsit

What happens when Government policy changes, some Universities fold or shrink, fees are not free, and there is not the same attraction to study in Glasgow? It seems that short term gain is at the fore and not enough thought is being given to the long term. Especially on the waterfront.

This looks horrible, and it would appear Glasgow is building enough student housing to match its number of 'gourmet' burger joints.

I was never convinced about this one when it was a GMAD design. It looks far too peacemeal for that location as a backdrop to the suspension bridge - The setbacks achieve nothing more than making the volume less coherent. It is also far too high for the half block depth - I feel for the poor residents on Fox street (narrower than most Glasgow lanes) who will never see daylight again.

Noticed excavators on site...is this what's being built???

Spoke to workmen today who said they would be working here for four years, surely that's unlikely. Unlike person above, I cannot see any connection whatsoever to Kelvin Court. More student accommodation for Glasgow. More high rise. Contributes nothing to riverfront other than fill a gap from last failed project. Those on the top will be able to converse with the sky bar drinkers in the new hotel being built in Dixon Street!

I am a resident of Fox Street right behind this, and I am completely disgusted that something of this size is being constructed right in front of my home. It is ridiculous!

#14 away and swing Jim. Did the deeds to your flat include a no build clause to the site in front??? Nimby at its worst.
