£2.7m Shields Centre opens its doors to patients
Hub West Scotland and the NHS have unveiled their newly completed Shields Centre in East Polloksields, Glasgow, a £2.7m community services building incorporating two GP surgeries, social work services and healthcare facilities.

Intended to offer a one stop shop for access to health and social care services it replaces a former gap site and includes a walled garden and allotment space together with fin details created by artist Alex Hamilton.

Designed by Anderson Bell Christie and delivered by contractor CBC the scheme will enhance community service provision in the local area alongside a new community centre and Gaelic school.

Commenting on the design the practice said: “The building scale takes its cue from the nearby tenements, and likewise the brick selection is contemporary and reflective of the sandstone warmth of the residential tenements; contributing to the local fabric regeneration. The building is centred round a bright, airy, double-height waiting and reception area with short wings containing consulting rooms leading off the main public space.”

Very interesting! This is a 'rich' sculptural little building. The classical 'form' is belied by the brick cladding and the 'industrial' Behrens-like pilasters so much so that it could be a pump-house, or some other utilitarian structure. The building has a human scale. I like it. It is ambigious and and warm. Wouldn't mind going in there to get my ear syringed. Not at all. (unlike that clinic building on Saracen street in Possil)

This is a pleasant change! Something light, rich and simple - lovely. Are there any plans available UR?

Of course, I've added a ground floor and site plan.
