The University of Edinburgh has won planning permission for an innovation centre and campus hub for veterinary staff and students at its Easter Bush campus.

Designed by Atkins the £32m scheme will incorporate research facilities, laboratories, offices and an exhibition space to further the institution’s ambitions in the fields of animal science and food security.

Conceived as part of a wider  master plan the development will comprise two distinct elements arranged around a central atrium space, allowing for future expansion; including a £12m energy centre and an Advanced Computing Facility - also designed by Atkins.

Atkins’ UK design director Philip Watson said: “Universities around the UK are working harder than ever to attract students, staff and wider investment. Good design has a key role to play in meeting these strategic goals which is why we’ve grown our education studio over the past couple of years.”

Work is expected to commence in February 2015 for completion by 2016.
