National Theatre of Scotland to build £6m Speirs Locks HQ
The National Theatre of Scotland has revealed plans to build a £6m headquarters within a converted industrial building alongside the Forth & Clyde Canal at Speirs Locks, Glasgow.

Designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects the scheme would see the arts body consolidate its existing operations within a 3,700sq/m ‘creation centre’ where theatre productions can be devised, developed and rehearsed alongside supporting functions such as set and costume design.

To minimise costs the existing warehouse will be stripped back to the structural frame before being reclad, with interior spaces configured as a mixture of open plan areas and cellular offices.

In their design statement Gareth Hoskins say: “With the new canal-side walkway and bridge improving public access to the front of the site, the area in front of the building will be open to the public.

“In keeping with the context, the future function of the building and its image as a creative factory, the new building will be clad in powder-coated sinusoidal metal cladding. This will be hung vertically in four horizontal bands which rationalise and simplify the window and door openings. In addition to windows and solid sinusoidal cladding the proposal includes perforated sinusoidal cladding.

“The perforated cladding will continue across some windows to provide security and shading on the south façade as well as creating internal naturally lit spaces of varying character. The intent is that considered design of the window and screening layout combined with careful detailing will elevate the building beyond typical industrial building design.”

The scheme is part of an embryonic cultural quarter which includes a Malcolm Fraser designed rehearsal space for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Glasgow Sculpture Studios.
