Richard Murphy to lead design of former Merchant City Selfridges site
Richard Murphy Architects have been appointed by Mace and Mercer Real Estate Partners, 50/50 joint venture purchasers of a prominent Merchant City gap site, to design a major mixed-use scheme for the plot.

Mace will publish more detail on the cost and design of the project over the coming weeks but are committed to the delivery of new homes and shops after completing its purchase from Selfridges.

The deal ends a seven year stalemate on the Candleriggs site after Selfridges first put on hold and then abandoned plans to build a major department store, following its purchase of the land for £15m back in 2007.

Mace development director Mike Myles commented: “We are incredibly excited to have acquired the site and we look forward to developing proposals in conjunction with Glasgow City Council and local stakeholders. We are fully committed to developing a high class scheme that will positively contribute to the Merchant City”.

JLL will advise the team on planning ahead of a formal application to Glasgow City Council by the end of the year.
