First look inside devastated Glasgow School of Art
Images depicting the destruction wrought by a fire which tore through the Glasgow School of Art have illustrated the scale of damage suffered by its priceless interiors, principally the library. The ornate wooden interior of the room has been reduced to charcoal by the blaze with extensive damage visible throughout the west wing. Only the rapid response of emergency services stalled the conflagration from enveloping the entire building, destroying much more of value. A GSA spokeswoman said: "Mackintosh was an amazing designer but he used ordinary materials. Those materials are still available today and we have the plans for the library and photographs, so we can rebuild it. It won’t be tomorrow but we will make it happen."

Given the reports the fire started in the basement I think this has had a very lucky escape! There have been offers of financial assistance from the Scottish and Westminster Governments, which is all very nice. However, serious question, is the building not insured?

So why the fundraising?

"The school and its contents were insured and covered for fire and peril."

There is no such thing as luck here. The building was partially destroyed due to the lack of adeqate fire protection for a building of such global importance. It is a dereliction of duty for vast sums to have been spent on the new art school across the road whilst the masterpiece remained unprotected. The estates people charged with looking after this building should hang their heads in shame.
